Background

Ndlelanhle Biyase better known to music fans as ABDUS, was born in Clermont, Durban March 13th 1984. Ndelanhle has been a passionate music fan from an early age, and growing up he was listening to rap music throughout his teenage years. He got into hip hop in 1994 through his brother who played tapes of Kriss Kross, KRS One and Biggie. That’s when he, at the age of 10, started writing his own rhymes. He single-handedly started the ciphers at the bus terminals between Pine and Commercial Street in Durban in 2004. These ciphers would go on every Friday for over a year with Abdus never missing a single session or losing a battle. Changing his name to ABDUS (servant of peace, unique, wise and powerful), the young rapper went into the studio in 2004 for the first time to start recording his rhymes. Then he decided to drop a mixtape called Terminally Ill featuring the best MC’s at the terminals.

In 2009 he released his own mixtape titled “ The Fixtape”. The Fixtape sold +/- 4000 copies by using his street team.

Style and influence

The innovative rap style of ABDUS evolves around raw hip hop with rock elements to it, but easy to the ear for all ages to listen to. The Durban rapper has an exceptional gift for language and his songs are filled with clever puns and wordplay. ABDUS is influenced by bands like: Coldplay, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Linkin Park, Nas, J-Dilla and The Roots.

Performances

ABDUS has gathered hundreds of fans of Zulu rap. ABDUS is a charismatic and energetic performer, one of the main reason he gets a lot of appreciation. Outside of his performances he is a lot quieter, he refuses to follow the ordinary trend and become just another hard-boiled macho rapper.

A selection of some places where ABDUS has performed: MTV BASE at The Playhouse, Durban City Hall for the Nelson Mandela Birthday Celebration, Gold Reef in Johannesburg for The Hype Magazine Awards 2009 and 2010 and he was one of the artists that were chosen to perform at various Durban Fan Parks for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In 2006 and 2008 ABDUS supported CD launches  of Zubs, Prokid and Tumi and the Volume.

In 2011 and 2012 Abdus supported international acts Lil’ Wayne and Usher.

In 2012 Abdus  was invited to perform at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Spain.

Awards

In April 2009 ABDUS got nominated by Hype Magazine in three categories for a Hype Award (only national hip hop awards in South Africa): Best Lyricist, Best New Comer and Best Mixtape. He ended up walking away with an award for Best Lyricist. This award was the beginning to spread ABDUS’ music throughout South Africa.

The Library

Eagerly awaited by hundreds of Zulu rap fans, ABDUS released his debut album titled: “ The Library” in May 2012. The reviews are very positive and the journey continues…
